Who watches in Italian
Italian is the language of Italy, of the Italian speaking part of Switzerland, of San Marino and Vatican City, and of large communities in Argentina, the United States, Brazil and Australia. Italy itself is one of the largest economies in Europe, with sixty million people who overwhelmingly prefer to watch and buy in Italian.
Italy has a long tradition of dubbing, and many Italians grew up watching foreign films and series voiced in Italian. A video that speaks Italian therefore feels familiar rather than foreign, whether it is a brand film, a product demo or a course. Subtitles under English reach far fewer people there.
What Sonilo does in Italian
Italian
Italian is selected when you start from this page. Add any other language in the same job; each is priced on its own.
Lip sync, on or off
On, the speakers' mouths are rendered again to match the Italian lines. Off, your picture stays exactly as it was and only the voice changes.
Proofread the Italian script
Read the transcript beside its Italian translation, line by line, and correct it before anything is voiced. Or upload your own Italian .srt or .vtt and the dub says exactly those lines.
Italian subtitles in the picture
When the dub comes back with its Italian script, style the subtitles and export a copy with them burned in, set in Noto Sans unless you pick another font.
Getting Italian right
What to check while you proofread a video going into Italian.
Choose tu or Lei
Italian distinguishes the informal tu from the formal Lei. Lifestyle brands, apps and creators mostly use tu; banks, insurers, healthcare and many B2B companies prefer Lei or a neutral voi. Decide once and read the translated script with only that in mind, because switching midway sounds careless.
Italian runs longer than English
Italian usually needs more syllables than English for the same idea. A dense English line can come back rushed. While you proofread, shorten long phrases and drop filler so the Italian voice can keep a natural, unhurried rhythm.
Gender and agreement
Italian adjectives and past participles agree with the gender of the person they describe. If your speaker is a woman, or you address an audience of women, check that the script agrees throughout; a translation can default to the masculine.
Food, design and English terms
Italians care about the words for things they know well, food and design above all, so check those terms carefully. Many tech and marketing words, such as smartphone, marketing and social, are used in English, and translating them can sound stiff.
Who translates video into Italian
Fashion, food and design brands
Brands selling into Italy, or Italian brands showing their products in Italian, can turn one master video into an Italian version without a new shoot. Proofread every claim and product name before it is voiced.
Online stores and product demos
Italian shoppers respond to product videos in their own language. Translate the demo, quote prices in euros, and download the Italian cut for each marketplace and social account.
Training and corporate video
Companies with teams in Italy and Italian speaking Switzerland can give staff training and updates in Italian, and add German and French in the same job for the rest of Switzerland.
Creators and educators
Channels about history, travel, cooking or science can reach Italian viewers, who are used to dubbed content, with the videos they already have.
You read the script before it is voiced.
Four steps from the video you already have to the same video in Italian.
- 01
Upload your video
An .mp4, .mov or .m4v up to 5 minutes and 400 MB. Sonilo detects the language that is spoken, so there is nothing to set. Add an .srt or .vtt per language if you already have the lines.
- 02
Pick Italian
Choose Italian, add more languages if you like, and decide whether lip sync renders the mouths again to match.
- 03
Proofread the Italian script
Switch on proofreading to read the transcript and the Italian translation line by line, and fix names, product terms and jokes before anything is voiced.
- 04
Watch, then download
Play every language in the browser. Download the translated videos and their subtitles on any paid plan.
Made for the video you already cut.
The soundtrack stays
Sonilo keeps the original background music and sound effects and replaces only the speech, with lip sync on or off.
The speaker’s own voice
Sonilo keeps the speaker’s own voice in the new language, so the translated speech sounds like the person in your video, not a stock voice. There is no voice to record or set up.
Lip sync, when you want it
On: mouths are re-rendered to match the new language. Off: your original picture stays untouched and only the voice is replaced.
You approve the words
The translation is a script you can read and correct first. A product name, a joke, a line of dialogue: fix it before it is spoken.
Your subtitles, spoken
Upload an .srt or .vtt for a language and the dub says exactly those lines, instead of a machine translation of them.
Music for the new cut
Sonilo also adds music to video. If a translated version needs its own soundtrack, add music to it in the same account.

Before you upload
What people ask before they translate their first video.
Will the Italian use tu or Lei?
That depends on the translated script, which you can read and change before anything is voiced. Choose the form that suits your audience and make every line agree while you proofread.
Can I translate for Italian speaking Switzerland?
Yes. Sonilo dubs standard Italian, which viewers in Ticino understand. Add German and French in the same job to cover the rest of Switzerland from one upload.
Can I translate an Italian video into English?
Yes. Upload the video spoken in Italian and pick English, or any other language Sonilo dubs. The spoken language is detected for you.
Does lip sync work with Italian?
Yes. On, the mouths of the speakers are rendered again to match the Italian lines. Off, your picture stays exactly as it was and only the voice changes.
Can I put Italian subtitles on the video?
Yes, when the dub comes back with its Italian script: proofread it first, or upload your own .srt or .vtt. On a computer you can then style the subtitles and export a copy of the video with them burned in, set in Noto Sans unless you pick another font.
Which languages can I translate into Italian from?
Any of the other 21 languages Sonilo works with. You do not pick the source: Sonilo detects the language spoken in your video when it transcribes it, then translates that transcript into Italian.
Which languages can I translate into?
English, German, Spanish (Latin America), Spanish, Hindi, Indonesian, Arabic, French, Chinese (Mandarin), Japanese, Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese, Vietnamese, Korean, Italian, Russian, Tamil, Turkish, Kannada, Thai, Gujarati, Malayalam, Punjabi (India), Sindhi (India). Pick any number in one job.
How long can my video be?
Up to 5 minutes and 400 MB, as .mp4, .mov or .m4v. For something longer, split it and translate the parts.
Can I edit the translation?
Yes. You read and correct the translated script before the video is rendered, so names and phrasing come out the way you want.
What does lip sync change?
With lip sync on, the speakers' mouths are rendered again to match the new language. With it off, your picture is left exactly as it was and only the voice changes, so mouths still move to the original language.
Does Sonilo keep the background music and sound effects?
Yes. Sonilo keeps your video's original background music and sound effects and replaces only the speech, so the translated version plays over the same soundtrack, with lip sync on or off.
Does Sonilo clone the speaker's voice?
Yes. Sonilo keeps the speaker's own voice in the new language: the translated speech sounds like the person in your video, not a stock voice, and when several people speak, each keeps their own. There is no voice to record or set up first.
I already have subtitles. Can I use them?
Yes. Upload an .srt or .vtt for a language and the dub says exactly those lines.
How does Sonilo compare with HeyGen, ElevenLabs and Rask?
Sonilo suits short creator clips that also need music or sound effects: 24 languages, videos up to 5 minutes, lip sync on Pro and Premium, plus one free trial on Free and Creator. HeyGen lists more languages, and ElevenLabs Dubbing is the cheapest way in. We make Sonilo, and our comparison of eight AI video translators, limits included, is at https://sonilo.com/compare/best-ai-video-translators.
Can I translate a video for free?
The free plan comes with 2,000 credits every two weeks, which covers about 40 seconds of video in one language. You can watch the result in the browser. Downloading it takes any paid plan.
