About this comparison
Sonilo Marketing publishes this comparison and sells one of the products. Source-bounded workflow descriptions were checked October 12, 2026. No blind listening, output-quality, latency or frame-accuracy benchmark was run. Recommendations are conditional editorial judgments, not a measured winner.
Quick comparison for video creators
| Tool | Documented input / workflow | When to shortlist it | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sonilo | Video-to-SFX or text-to-SFX; API workflows available | A clip needs scene-aware Foley, ambience, or action cues | Review generated timing and the commercial eligibility of your plan. |
| ElevenLabs | Text descriptions generate individual sound effects; SFX API available | You know the sound you want and will place it in an editor | Text-to-SFX alone does not establish automatic alignment to your footage; check paid-plan and service-specific terms. |
| Adobe Firefly | Text and recorded voice guidance; video/audio timeline workflow | You want to perform a timing idea and refine or layer the effect | Review timing manually and use the commercially released feature under applicable Adobe guidelines. |
Sonilo vs ElevenLabs: documented API routes (checked October 12, 2026)
| Feature | Sonilo | ElevenLabs |
|---|---|---|
| API availability | REST API: POST /v1/video-to-sfx and POST /v1/text-to-sfx as async tasks polled at GET /v1/tasks/{task_id}; official SDKs, CLI, and MCP server. | REST API: POST /v1/sound-generation returns the audio file in the response. |
Sonilo plan rights (see “Commercial-use differences” below) were checked October 12, 2026 against the Terms updated October 2, 2026, sections 6.1–6.2 and 10. Users remain responsible for necessary third-party clearances. Historical feature and pricing estimates were withdrawn from this revision; the API routes above are documented interfaces, not performance results. Sonilo Terms of Service.

Cost per minute of sound effects
Do not compare a nominal per-minute rate without minimum duration, per-generation floors, retries and plan allocation. The previous numerical estimates are withdrawn pending a like-for-like pricing verification; they were not a measured production bill. When to choose Sonilo vs ElevenLabs
Shortlist Sonilo when you want footage to guide sound-effects generation. Test whether the returned cues fit your edit and obtain the applicable output permissions. A web-plan description does not establish every direct API account’s downstream rights. Video-to-SFX reference Terms
Shortlist ElevenLabs when you can describe an isolated effect and intend to place it in the editor. Its text-to-SFX documentation is evidence of that workflow, not a head-to-head cost or quality result. ElevenLabs sound effects
For a single sound, compare permitted output variations against the same cue. For ambience, test the actual loop boundary. Do not infer a seamless result for every output from a loop option.
Choose by the edit you need to finish
Selection notes checked October 12, 2026. These are documented workflow differences, not a hands-on audio-quality ranking. Compare one representative cue at the same playback level and retain the output and applicable license evidence.
| Your input and deliverable | Shortlist | Decision boundary |
|---|---|---|
| A finished clip needing scene-led Foley, ambience, or impacts | Sonilo video-to-SFX | Use footage as input, then inspect each cue in the edit. Video-aware generation is not a guarantee of frame-perfect timing. |
| A written description of one effect, with placement handled in your editor | ElevenLabs or Sonilo text-to-SFX | Compare variations and editing effort; a text prompt alone does not prove automatic alignment with footage. |
| A voice performance to guide timing and energy | Adobe Firefly | Adobe documents voice-guided generation and timeline refinement. Its current editor documentation describes four variations, each up to 30 seconds. |
| A client ad or monetized YouTube delivery | Any shortlisted tool only after its license check | Select for the generation plan, product-specific terms and deliverable, not the words royalty-free. Confirm raw-asset handoff separately from use in a finished video. |
Why the license check cannot be skipped
ElevenLabs sound-effects landing copy and its publishing help page use different levels of detail: the help page says free-plan output is non-commercial and excludes Beta Services from its paid-plan commercial permission. Check the terms for the exact service instead of treating attribution as permission for an ad. For Sonilo, use an eligible commercial plan and retain the plan and generation record. For Firefly, verify the released feature and applicable Adobe guidelines.

A useful comparison records cue placement, unwanted sounds, dialogue masking and the minutes spent correcting the result. If a stock effect or your own recording wins that comparison, use it; do not regenerate merely to get an AI-labelled asset.
Sonilo: a video-first starting point
Sonilo offers video-to-SFX for generating effects from visual context and text-to-SFX for a described sound. It is a useful shortlist option when Foley, ambience, or action cues need to follow a clip, or when a product team needs an API workflow. Treat generated timing as a draft to review, not a guarantee that every transient lands on the correct frame. For a single precisely specified sound, compare a text-driven option too.

ElevenLabs: describe and choose individual effects
ElevenLabs documents text-to-sound-effects generation and an SFX API. It suits a creator who can describe a whoosh, impact, or ambience and wants variants to audition. In that text-driven workflow, plan to place and mix the selected effect against the video yourself. This comparison does not infer the capabilities of every other ElevenLabs product from its text-to-SFX endpoint.

Adobe Firefly: guide a sound with text or a performance
Firefly accepts text prompts and recorded audio or voice guidance. Its documented workflow supports uploaded video/audio, timeline placement, and layers; exports include WAV audio and MP4 with audio. Consider it when performing a sound helps express the timing or intensity you want. Audition the result and align it in the edit rather than assuming automatic scene-perfect synchronization.

Commercial-use differences to check before release
| Tool | Published commercial-use position | Release boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Sonilo | Free and Creator generated outputs are non-commercial. Pro permits advertising, client work and monetized channels; Premium adds film, television, broadcast and studio games. The Terms define studio games by an individual’s or a team’s combined revenue and funding of at least US$200,000 over the preceding 12 months; indie games below that threshold are covered from Pro. Enterprise follows its applicable agreement. | Use the plan active at generation. Later upgrades do not extend earlier output rights. Check direct API-account permissions separately; this web-plan summary does not establish downstream sublicensing or raw-asset redistribution. |
| ElevenLabs | Free-plan output is non-commercial. Paid plans include commercial licensing subject to applicable terms, with Beta Services excluded. | Non-commercial sharing of free output requires attribution; paying later does not retroactively license earlier free output. |
| Adobe Firefly | The official SFX page permits commercial use of commercially released Firefly output under Adobe guidelines. | Check the specific feature/version and applicable terms; do not generalize this to every experimental or third-party model. |
Sonilo's Terms distinguish web-plan permissions from API-use requirements. Section 10 requires compliance with any additional API terms; it does not itself identify every direct API account as Pro or Premium. Obtain the applicable API permission before promising client or downstream-user rights. Free generated output requires visible credit; Creator, Pro and Premium output do not require attribution under section 6.2. Sonilo Terms, sections 6.1–6.2 and 10.
Sonilo licensing and plan eligibility
ElevenLabs: Can I publish the content I generate?
A tool allowing commercial use is not a promise of exclusivity, a blanket right to redistribute raw assets, or immunity from a platform claim. For client handoff, retain the generation date, account plan, output file, source terms, and agreed use. Escalate unusual resale, sublicensing, or exclusivity requirements before delivery.
Choose by the job, not by the longest feature list
| Video job | Practical selection approach |
|---|---|
| YouTube tutorial or social clip | For an isolated transition or interface cue, start with a clearly described sound. For a visually busy sequence, compare a video-guided pass with manually placed cues. |
| Paid advertisement | Use the same short edit to check transient placement, product sound character, dialogue masking, and applicable commercial rights. |
| Client video | Agree whether you are delivering only a finished mix or editable/raw audio assets, then check rights and retain records for that deliverable. |
| Foley and ambience across scenes | Separate continuous background atmosphere from individual footsteps or impacts. Judge continuity and cue placement independently. |
A repeatable audition before buying a workflow
Use a short clip you have permission to process. Mark three visible cue times, such as a cut, a contact, and a movement. Generate candidates using the inputs each tool actually supports, then compare them at similar playback volume in your editor. Inspect the first attack of each cue against the intended frame; listen for unrelated sounds, abrupt ambience changes, and speech masking. Keep a stock or recorded effect as a baseline. Choose the workflow that requires the least corrective editing for your actual project.
Worked cue sheet: convert timing error into frames
Synthetic example only: no provider outputs were generated. At 24 fps, offset frames = (observed onset − target onset) × 24. Positive values are late; negative values are early. The first transient—not the file start—is the observed onset. These three invented values demonstrate the calculation, not any tool’s performance.
| Cue | Target (s) | Observed (s) | Offset (ms) | Offset (frames) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Impact | 5 | 5.125 | 125 | 3 |
| Door | 12 | 11.75 | -250 | -6 |
| End cue | 16 | 16 | 0 | 0 |
For real evaluation, preserve the project frame rate, input and output hashes, provider/version, prompt/settings, every attempted output and selection rationale. Log extra sounds, dialogue masking, editing minutes and rights review separately. Set cue-specific tolerances before testing; these synthetic rows define no universal pass threshold.
When a stock library or recording is the better choice
Generation is not always the fastest route. A familiar library asset may be easier when you need a repeatable cue today; recording may be preferable for a specific product or location. Keep an established sound-design workflow when exact repeatability, provenance documentation, or contractual exclusivity is essential. Evaluate its license separately instead of assuming stock or generated audio is automatically safer.
Frequently asked questions
Which AI sound effect generator is best for YouTube, ads, and client videos?
There is no measured overall winner in this comparison. Evaluate video-guided generation, text-described effects and voice-guided design against the same edit. Confirm commercial permissions separately for the actual plan, service and intended delivery.
Are AI sound effects automatically frame-accurate?
No universal guarantee follows from the label AI-generated or video-to-SFX. Check the onset of each important cue at the project frame rate and correct it in the timeline if needed.
Does royalty-free mean free or unrestricted?
No. Read the license for plan, attribution, permitted uses, and asset redistribution. Commercial permission does not by itself establish copyright ownership or permission to resell an isolated sound pack.
Can I use the same effect in a monetized video and a client ad?
Check both delivery contexts against the terms that apply to that generated asset. Do not assume a non-commercial trial output becomes commercially licensed just because the final project changes or you later upgrade.
